The National Park Service (NPS) wants to tap into location-based data to track visitor-use patterns. It is used for improving visitor’s experience, long-range transportation, and infrastructure planning. They want to hold visitor mobile device data. It helps to develop long-range transportation. Visitor used to plan for itself. Other agencies can manage federal lands.
Recently, NPS said it wanted to learn what kinds of location-based data generated by park visitors i.e., GPS, contextual, wireless networking signals. They could be collected, processed and analyzed for management planning, long-range transportation planning, performance management and infrastructure investments.
Big Data is Getting Ready for a Better Vacation
NPS Intermountain Region:
NPS Intermountain Region consists of parks in Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. These places made visitation records in 2017, with more than 57.5 million recreation visits. This shows a 46% increase over 2013. It is more than double the national average for the past 10 years.
Request for Information (RFI) said, “Trend data suggested that park visits nationally gets the increase. It creates a fair amount of urgency for many park units. It collects data regarding visitor to use different patterns”.
- NPS wants to use Big Data to help it balance the visitor access and experience with the preservation of resources.
- It wants to understand the origins, destinations and demographic profiles of visitors.
- This also includes traffic patterns, average travel times and speeds and queueing times at entrance stations.
- It also measures the impact of management actions to manage visitor transportation.
- NPS wants to use big data to evaluate commercial transportation services and inform travel demand modeling and management.
- NPS is also looking for the data to better understand levels of congestion and the viability of alternative routes and modes. To help answer these questions, NPS is looking for available real-time.
Acceptance of Big Data:
The reason behind the collection, processing, and analyzing of big data is one of the great interest. IMRO evaluates the validity of assumptions based on this type of data includes Data Collection and Processing. RFI describes Big Data is specific to NPS. Its larger goal is to learn what data and collection methods are appropriate for all federal land management agencies at differing scales, geography, and topography — from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to the Bureau of Land Management, to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Defense. Last August, NPS issued an RFI to put its visitor experience data from 1999-present into usable formats. So that, it will be easier to review and analyze.
