Facebook sets a new task for AI: guide a virtual tourist around New York

How do you teach computers to understand language? It is one of the grand challenges of AI. We don’t know the best way to tackle the problem. Facebook’s AI research lab, FAIR, taught AIs to understand language for guiding virtual tourists around New York City.

FAIR calls it as “Talk the Walk”, a dataset designed by other researchers. It is comprised of three elements:

  1. Small maps of New York City neighborhoods (each couple of blocks wide),
  2. 360-degree photos of the same locations, and
  3. Sample dialogues of humans guiding one another around these neighborhoods.

FAIR’s researchers suggest that teams try to teach two AI agents to navigate their virtual New York maps. One agent would be a “tourist” who will see the 360-degree photos however not the map. The other agent would be a “guider” who can see the map but not the photos. These agents have to talk to one another to establish the tourist’s location and help them navigate to another point on the map. The traveller would hunt for near landmarks, like restaurants, bars, and occasional outlets, and therefore the guide would provide them directions.
